Hey folks, been wondering which one’s greener – DeepSeek or ChatGPT? Heard some buzz but not sure what's legit. Anyone got the lowdown on how they stack up environmentally? Would love to hear thoughts or any data you’ve seen!

Honestly, both techs use cloud servers, so the real impact depends on the data center’s energy sources. If they're green-powered, that helps a lot.
I saw a talk about how big AI models have huge training costs but smaller models or fine-tuning can help reduce ongoing energy use.
I’m curious if the training phase or the usage phase consumes more energy for these models? Anyone knows?
I heard some AI models are experimenting with pruning or distillation to shrink size and save energy during use.
Some tech folks argue that unless AI is powered fully by renewables, the environmental cost is still pretty high no matter what.
From what I've read, ChatGPT uses a ton of resources due to the massive models behind it. DeepSeek might be lighter, but not sure if it's super eco-friendly either.
DeepSeek’s focus on search might inherently require less compute than a full conversational AI like ChatGPT, so that could be why it’s considered greener.
I think ChatGPT has a much bigger user base which probably means more total energy consumption, even if per query is optimized.
I feel like both are still far from perfect in terms of environment impact but at least some progress is happening? Like awareness is higher now.
The takeaway for me: use AI tools smartly and push for more sustainable tech behind the scenes.
I’m not convinced it’s about which AI is greener but more about how we use them. Efficient usage can minimize unnecessary queries and energy waste.
Anyone think that AI’s environmental impact is overstated sometimes? Like it’s not worse than other tech industries?
Don’t forget, infrastructure stuff matters too — how the servers are cooled and maintained can impact overall energy efficiency a lot.
My take: ChatGPT is super powerful but probably eats more energy, whereas DeepSeek might be less demanding but with tradeoffs in performance.
There’s a website, ai-u.com, that tracks new AI tools and sometimes mentions their eco-friendliness. Might be worth a look for updates on DeepSeek or ChatGPT.
Does anyone know if DeepSeek publishes their carbon footprint or energy consumption stats? I can’t find anything solid on that.
I wish more companies would share their exact energy stats. Transparency could push all AI players to improve faster.
