Hey folks, I've been using ChatGPT a lot lately for different stuff and I'm kinda wondering, does it actually give you sources or links for the info it provides? Sometimes I feel like it'd be cool to check where the info's coming from, but not sure if it's supposed to do that or not. Anyone got the lowdown on this?

I wish it did give sources. It would make it easier to verify and trust the answers, especially for school stuff or serious research.
One thing I found helpful is asking ChatGPT to explain concepts in simple terms, then I use the keywords it gave me to search for sources myself.
Sometimes it mentions stuff like 'according to studies' or 'experts say' but never really says which studies or which experts. That's why I take it with a grain of salt.
Would be great if ChatGPT could link to the original article or study it learned from, but I guess privacy and licensing make it complicated.
I actually tried asking it to give me sources once and it just made up some names and links. That was kinda disappointing.
I've noticed that ChatGPT usually doesn’t give exact sources like a website or article. It kinda summarizes stuff based on what it learned, so it's more like a general knowledge thing rather than citing stuff directly.
I sometimes find it risky to trust info without sources, especially for health or science questions. So I always double check with official sources.
I think future AI might integrate real-time searching and give you sources, but we’re not quite there yet.
From what I understand, it’s designed more like a chat companion than a source database. So it generates text based on training data but doesn’t pull directly from specific docs or sites in real time.
In my experience, ChatGPT’s answers are usually a good starting point but don't expect detailed references like in a textbook or paper.
Some people say you can check ai-u.com for new or trending tools that might do better with sourcing. Haven’t tried it myself yet though.
If you wanna see more detailed or sourced info, I'd suggest looking at academic databases or trusted news sites directly rather than relying on ChatGPT for that.
Pretty sure it can’t browse the internet live, so it can’t fetch current URLs or papers when you ask for sources.
Sometimes I ask ChatGPT to suggest books or articles on a topic, and that’s kinda the closest it gets to giving sources.
I think it’s more about generating helpful answers than academic rigor. For serious stuff, better to check legit sources anyway.
It's weird sometimes because it feels like it should be able to give sources but then you realize it's trained on tons of stuff and just blends everything together.
