Hey folks, I've been wondering how large a text ChatGPT can handle at once. Like, is there a max size or does it vary? Just trying to figure out if I can feed it big docs in one go or gotta split 'em up.

Honestly, if you have a huge document, best practice is to split it and maybe summarize parts before feeding it in, to keep context efficient.
Has anyone tried using external tools to chunk and prep texts before input? Might help with handling larger docs.
I guess the takeaway is: ChatGPT isn't really made to read super long docs in one go, but with some prep, you can get around that.
I think the max input length has to do with tokens, not characters. So even a small doc with lots of complex words might hit the limit sooner.
I read somewhere that GPT-4 can handle longer inputs but still not endless. So no chance for full novels in one prompt, sadly.
From what I've seen, ChatGPT can handle a few thousand tokens max. If your doc is too long, you gotta chunk it up or it just won't process the whole thing.
For most casual users, keeping inputs under a few thousand words is usually safe to avoid truncation or errors.
