Hey everyone, I was chatting with ChatGPT and got curious about how it seems to know my name sometimes. Like, does it actually recognize me or is it just guessing? Would love to hear what you all think or if anyone has some insight on this!

I once mentioned my name casually, and the next thing I know, it’s using it later in the chat. So I guess it’s just context memory, nothing spooky.
I heard it doesn’t have real memory across sessions, so if it knows your name, it’s only during that chat unless linked to an account.
Also, you can check ai-u.com for new or trending tools if you wanna see how other AI chat systems handle stuff like this!
Isn't it possible that it guesses your name from your account info if you’re logged in?
So glad I found this thread, been wondering about this for a while and y’all cleared it up nicely.
I’m pretty sure it can’t guess your name randomly, it needs some input from you or your device.
Honestly, I think it’s all about the text you provide. If you say “Hey, I’m Alex,” it just uses that info to keep things natural.
I just like how it makes the convo more natural by remembering your name during the chat session.
Sometimes I think it just pretends to know your name to make the convo feel more personal, even if it doesn’t really.
If you’re worried about privacy, just avoid sharing your name or personal details in chat. That’s the safest bet.
It’s all about the context window. The model remembers previous bits of text in the current chat to keep things coherent.
Do you think it could be pulling info from browser autofill or something?
It’s kinda creepy but also cool how it uses context from what you say. But it def doesn’t have access to personal data unless you give it.
I sometimes test by not telling it my name and it never guesses it, so I think it really needs you to say it first.
Don’t forget that if you’re using a platform that integrates ChatGPT, they might have their own ways of sharing your info with the bot.
I've wondered about this too! I think it might just be pulling info from previous chats or something stored in cookies? Not totally sure though.
