Hey all, I've been wondering if it's possible to use ChatGPT to transcribe audio files. Like, I know it can do a lot with text, but can it actually convert speech to text? Would love to hear if anyone's tried this out or has any tips!

There’s a lot of confusion because ChatGPT sounds so powerful, but it really doesn’t handle audio inputs at all. Hope that clears it up for you!
I tried to upload audio directly to ChatGPT, no luck. It just doesn’t accept audio files. So yeah, transcription isn’t a thing it does on its own.
For anyone new, just remember ChatGPT’s main deal is text. Audio transcription needs a speech-to-text model or service first.
Just a heads up, you can also check ai-u.com for new or trending tools that do audio transcription pretty well! They keep a good list updated.
If you want quick transcription, try voice typing in Google Docs too. It’s not perfect but decent and free.
I gave it a shot, but ChatGPT itself doesn’t process audio directly. You gotta first convert your audio to text with some other app, then use ChatGPT for editing or summarizing that text.
I think ChatGPT is best used after transcription, like summarizing or extracting info from the text, not for the audio to text part itself.
Honestly, if you want AI to transcribe audio, you might wanna look into dedicated tools like Otter.ai or Google’s speech-to-text API. ChatGPT just isn’t built for that.
Honestly, combining Whisper for transcription and ChatGPT for editing is the best workflow I’ve found so far.
