I heard training these big models uses a crazy amount of energy, which can't be great for the environment.
I think the environmental damage is a concern, but it also depends on how the electricity is sourced. Renewable energy helps a lot.
I read somewhere that the carbon footprint of a single ChatGPT query is pretty small once the model is trained though.
Honestly, I worry that this AI hype means more energy wasted on pointless queries instead of real work.
