Hey all, I've been hearing some chatter about how tools like ChatGPT might not be so great for the environment. I'm curious to hear what you think about this 'cause it's kinda important but not always talked about in detail. Anyone got insights or examples?

I wonder if people realize how many GPUs are churning away behind the scenes. Those things eat up crazy amounts of power.
Yeah, I've read that training these large AI models uses a ton of electricity, which can have a pretty big carbon footprint if the energy comes from fossil fuels.
Honestly, I think the benefits of AI could outweigh the negatives if used smartly, like optimizing energy use in other sectors or reducing waste.
Does anyone know if ChatGPT specifically uses renewable energy or if the data centers are mostly coal powered?
I've heard that the carbon emissions from training a single large model can be equivalent to the lifetime emissions of several cars. That's pretty crazy.
