Three school children, 1 adult injured in Bella Coola grizzly bear attack - Vernon Morning Star

A grizzly bear attack in Bella Coola has left three school children and one adult injured, according to the BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS). The incident took place around 1:35 p.m. on Thursday, November 20, near a location known as the Old Trail, close to the 4 Mile area. The victims were part of a school group that had stopped along a trail near the river when the grizzly suddenly came out of the forest and attacked them. Despite the severity of the attack, multiple teachers showed quick thinking and courage by using pepper spray and a “bear banger” to deter the bear. BCCOS Inspector Kevin Van Damme shared a video update on Friday, confirming the use of these defensive measures. The injured adult and children were first treated at Bella Coola Hospital and then transferred to Vancouver for more advanced medical care. A group of conservation officers spent the night and early morning searching for the grizzly but were unable to locate it. Additional officers are now on site as BCCOS continues to gather and analyze evidence from the scene and surrounding areas. While the bear hasn’t been found yet, preliminary information suggests the animal may have been previously injured, which might have influenced its behavior. The incident has understandably caused distress within the Bella Coola community. BCCOS is maintaining close communication with the Nuxalk Nation, who have been actively involved in the response. Chief Samuel Schooner of the Nuxalk Nation acknowledged the gravity of the attack, describing it as unprecedented and resulting in significant trauma for their community. He praised the heroic actions of the teachers and students who responded swiftly to protect each other, noting that the outcome could have been far worse. In light of the attack, BCCOS advises residents to avoid the forested areas and the river near 4 Mile and to remain indoors until further notice. Chief Schooner emphasized that the immediate priority is the wellbeing and safety of the community members affected by this traumatic event. Authorities have asked anyone with information or bear sightings in Bella Coola to contact the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line. Meanwhile, the BC provincial government plans to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. on November 21 to address the incident and provide further updates. The community remains on alert as efforts to locate the bear and ensure public safety continue.
