The number of military officers currently detained in connection with the alleged coup attempt against President Bola Tinubu's government has increased significantly, reaching 42. Initially, the Defence Headquarters announced the arrest of 16 officers, citing disciplinary issues but not directly linking the detentions to a coup plot. However, sources close to Daily Trust have revealed that these arrests are tied to an effort aimed at disrupting Nigeria's continuous 26-year democratic governance. Security officials speaking on condition of anonymity informed Daily Trust that the detained officers are undergoing intense interrogations. The purpose is to uncover the depth of their involvement and whether they had moved beyond mere discussions to concrete plans. "We have so far picked up 42 officers. They’re being grilled to determine how deep their involvement is and if there was an actual plan," one insider said. There’s a possibility the number of arrests could rise further. The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the Military Police are actively tracing communication networks and possible financial backers linked to the alleged plot. Meanwhile, the government’s stance remains aligned with the military’s official position. Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to the President, emphasized on TVC that the Presidency fully supports the Armed Forces’ narrative on the matter. Dare reiterated that the Nigerian Armed Forces are constitutionally tasked with protecting the nation’s unity and territorial integrity. He expressed confidence in the loyalty of the military under Tinubu’s administration, stating, "We are gonna stick with the military’s narrative because they’re the constitutionally empowered body to secure this country. Until they say otherwise, that’s our position." Adding to the discourse, Bashir Galma, a retired military officer and security analyst, suggested the federal government might be hesitant to publicly acknowledge any coup attempt. This, he argued, is to avoid causing public panic or scaring off potential investors. However, Galma warned that excessive denial could backfire, eroding public trust if new information emerges that contradicts official statements. Taken together, these developments suggest a sensitive situation where the government is trying to balance transparency with stability.
