Jamaican music icon Sean Paul has opened up about the immense challenges facing his country in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm that wreaked havoc across several parts of the island last week. The Grammy-winning artist described the scale of recovery efforts as truly overwhelming, emphasizing how frightening the storm was, especially for his young children. He recalled how his kids witnessed trees bending and wind howling in ways they never had before, leaving them shocked and traumatized. Sean Paul expressed deep concern for those caught in the storm's epicenter, painting a bleak picture where it felt as if people had been transported back to the Middle Ages. The hurricane’s ferocious winds, reaching speeds up to 185 mph (295 km/h), claimed the lives of at least 28 people. Although Sean Paul and his family were in Kingston, the capital, which escaped the worst of the damage, areas further west suffered severe destruction. He shared chilling accounts from friends in Montego Bay who lost entire roofs to the storm yet remained tirelessly working to aid others by delivering food and clothing. For many, personal belongings have been ruined by mud and water, making it difficult to focus on anything positive amidst the devastation. In response to the crisis, Sean Paul pledged to donate $50,000 (£38,000) to match contributions made to Food For The Poor Jamaica. He described the situation as “mind-blowing,” revealing that after days of trying to coordinate help and communicate with those affected, he had a breakdown from the emotional toll. The exhaustion and depression that come with such a disaster are heavy, but he stressed the need to push forward because so much remains to be done. He recounted a recent visit to St Mary’s countryside, an area less severely hit but still struggling without electricity. Many residents there are isolated, unable to see the broader relief efforts as they focus on contacting family members to ensure their safety. Sean Paul highlighted that a lot of people don’t even know help is on the way due to limited information flow and blocked roads preventing aid from reaching them. He shared a heartbreaking story about 15 babies under three months old currently sleeping in cardboard boxes, underscoring the urgent need for assistance. Fellow Jamaican artist Shaggy has also been active on the ground, organizing aid convoys to deliver vital supplies. Shaggy expressed his devastation at witnessing the destruction firsthand, especially in areas like Black River where entire communities were flattened. His emotional response, including moments of tears, reflected the deep personal connection he feels to his homeland and its people. Shaggy described the aftermath as resembling a bomb site, a scene unlike anything he'd ever experienced. Sean Paul mentioned that Shaggy is planning a benefit concert slated for December to support long-term recovery efforts. They intend to promote it well ahead of time to maximize awareness and impact, rather than rushing into an immediate event. This collaborative effort echoes a shared commitment by Jamaican artists to help their fellow citizens rebuild and recover over the coming months and years.
