The federal RCMP’s Vancouver-based cybercrime unit played a key role in dismantling a massive network of over 1,000 malicious servers during a recent global operation aimed at tackling cybercrime. This international effort, known as Operation Endgame, brought together law enforcement and judicial agencies from Europe, North America, and Australia. According to a news release from the RCMP’s Pacific Region on November 13, the operation marked another significant milestone since Operation Endgame’s launch in 2022, having grown into one of the largest coordinated law enforcement actions against cybercrime worldwide. Europol led the initiative, managing the flow of information across its headquarters in the Netherlands and ensuring cross-border cooperation among authorities. This collaboration allowed investigators to effectively target the very tools cybercriminals rely on, including major infostealers, Remote Access Trojans (RATs), and botnets. These types of malicious software are notorious for stealing personal data such as login credentials and banking info or providing unauthorized remote access to infected machines, amplifying the potential harm to users. The RCMP emphasized that the goal extends beyond just catching criminals; it’s about disabling the infrastructure that enables them. As Supt. Adam MacIntosh stated, "Cybercrime knows no borders, and neither does our response." More than 100 officers from participating countries coordinated their efforts at Europol’s headquarters, and the operation expanded beyond law enforcement, involving over 30 public and private partners, including several cybersecurity firms that provided critical support. Technological advances continue to reshape the cybercrime landscape, forcing law enforcement to adapt their tactics. RCMP Insp. Shaun Foley highlighted this ongoing evolution, pointing out that police operations must transform along with the threats they face. The operation involved searches at 11 locations across Germany, Greece, and the Netherlands, which led to the seizure of 20 domain names linked to cybercrime activities. Authorities also arrested a man suspected to be the primary operator behind VenomRAT, a type of malware known for its remote access capabilities. The international nature of this crackdown underscores the complexity and scale of modern cybercrime, requiring unprecedented levels of cooperation.
