Auction of Nazi death camp artefacts cancelled, Poland's DPM says

A planned auction in Germany featuring artefacts that once belonged to prisoners of Nazi concentration camps has been called off after a wave of public backlash. Poland's Deputy Prime Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, confirmed the cancellation and expressed his gratitude to his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, for stepping in to prevent what Sikorski described as a scandal. The auction, which was supposed to take place on Monday in the city of Neuss, was organized by the German auction house Felzmann and included more than 600 items, some deeply personal and historically significant. These items ranged from a letter penned by an Auschwitz prisoner to a medical diagnosis report related to the forced sterilisation of a Dachau camp inmate, according to reports from German media. The revelation of this auction stirred outrage among Holocaust survivors, politicians, and various interest groups who demanded its immediate cancellation. Sikorski voiced the sentiment that respecting the victims of Nazi atrocities requires maintaining their dignity through silence rather than commodifying their suffering. By Sunday afternoon, the auction listings had been removed from the Felzmann website, signaling the house’s response to the mounting criticism, although the auctioneers have yet to issue a formal comment. German State Minister for Culture Wolfram Weimer condemned the sale as inappropriate, emphasizing that documents or reports created by Nazi perpetrators shouldn’t end up in private collections. He advocated for measures to prevent similar auctions from occurring in the future. The International Auschwitz Committee (IAC), represented by executive vice-president Christoph Heubner, voiced strong condemnation of the auction, describing it as a cynical and shameless act that left survivors and victims’ families feeling outraged and at a loss for words. Heubner stressed that these artefacts rightfully belong to the families of the victims and should be showcased in museums or memorial exhibitions, not reduced to commercial goods. Poland’s Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska announced plans for a thorough investigation into the provenance of the artefacts to determine whether some should be returned to Poland, acknowledging the deep historical and cultural significance attached to these items. The concentration camps of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, from which many of the artefacts reportedly originated, were sites of unimaginable suffering and mass murder during the Nazi regime. Auschwitz, in particular, was central to the Nazis’ genocidal campaign against Europe’s Jewish population, with nearly one million Jews perishing there, alongside thousands of Poles, Roma, and Russian prisoners of war. The planned auction’s contents stirred painful memories and highlighted ongoing sensitivities around how Holocaust-related materials are handled, preserved, and respected. This incident has reignited debates over the ethical responsibilities surrounding ownership and display of artefacts linked to one of history’s darkest chapters.
