Despite China’s claims over Taiwan—an island never governed by the Chinese Communist Party and a self-ruled democracy—the US continues to stand behind Taiwan’s defense in line with existing laws. US intelligence suggests Xi Jinping has ordered the military to prepare for a possible invasion of Taiwan by 2027, adding urgency to the situation. During a recent visit to Tokyo, Hegseth warned that China’s rapid military build-up poses a "real and urgent threat" to the Indo-Pacific region. He commended Japan’s efforts to bolster its defense capabilities and stressed the importance of the US-Japan alliance as a key deterrent against Chinese aggression.
