After a challenging southern road trip, the Vegas Golden Knights are back in Las Vegas to kick off a six-game homestand with a Friday afternoon game against the Colorado Avalanche. This matchup coincides with Nevada Day, a state holiday commemorating Nevada's 1864 admission to the Union. Traditionally, the Golden Knights host an afternoon game on this holiday, making it easier for kids off school to catch the action. Given how the 2025-26 season has started, locals might soon be calling it Jack Eichel Day, as the star center has been tearing up the ice.
Jack Eichel, now 29, has been one of the league’s hottest players, leading with 19 points in just 10 games. His recent performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he marked his birthday with two goals and an assist to help Vegas salvage a 6-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. The game was tight at 3-3 before Eichel broke away and scored the go-ahead goal with under five minutes left. He then added another goal off a slick feed from Ivan Barbashev to seal the deal before Tomas Hertl capped it with an empty-netter.
The Golden Knights’ road trip started rough with a 3-0 loss to the two-time defending Stanley Cup champs Florida Panthers, marking their first regulation loss of the season. They followed that with a 2-1 OT loss in Tampa Bay. Despite the setbacks, Eichel praised his teammates for the success he’s having. He credited the team’s chemistry and good play for his scoring streak, emphasizing that individual stats come from collective effort. "I play with some great players and have been the benefactor of some really good hockey and good plays," he said.
Winger Pavel Dorofeyev also stood out in the Carolina win, scoring twice and tying for the league lead with nine goals alongside Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon, Montreal’s Cole Caufield, and New Jersey's Jack Hughes. MacKinnon himself is coming off a blazing performance, netting two goals and an assist during Colorado’s 8-4 victory over New Jersey, breaking a four-game skid. That game also featured a milestone for MacKinnon, marking his 100th career three-point game. Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar contributed with four assists, and Victor Olofsson, a former Golden Knight, notched his first career hat trick.
Colorado coach Jared Bednar highlighted the importance of celebrating wins in a tough league and was pleased with the team’s effort against New Jersey. Despite a recent slump that included multiple overtime and shootout losses, the Avalanche have been consistent, losing just once in regulation this season. Makar stressed the team’s focus on building momentum from their recent win as they prepare for back-to-back games with Friday’s contest against Vegas and then a Saturday match in San Jose.
The Nevada Day game promises an exciting showdown between two Pacific Division leaders, with star power on full display. Vegas will look to keep their home streak alive, while Colorado aims to shake off recent close losses and reinforce their strong start. With Eichel firing on all cylinders and MacKinnon hungry to lead Colorado back to form, fans are in for a thrilling afternoon at the Lenovo Center.
