Exhibit depicting Oct. 7 attack at Israel musical festival in Chicago this month

A traveling exhibit in Chicago is offering an immersive experience meant to bring to life the horrors of the Hamas terror attack that took place on October 7, 2023, at a music festival in Israel. The exhibit aims to allow visitors not just to see, but to feel the impact of that tragic day, leaving a lasting emotional impression long after they leave. Julia Shindel, a Chicago resident, recalled the heart-wrenching moment she saw her 23-year-old son, Mark, just days after the attack. Mark was one of the 430 victims, and his death is poignantly memorialized on a wall within the exhibit. "To kill a child is to kill his mom," Julia said, visibly shaking as she remembered her loss, describing how her son was found with a bullet wound in his left eye. The exhibit, titled "The Moment Music Stood Still," is set up to recreate the festival grounds with incredible authenticity. Visitors walk across floors covered in sand and are surrounded by over 20,000 objects recovered from the site, including tents, clothing, teddy bears, and even port-a-potties. The director of the exhibit, Reut Feingold, emphasized that this is not just a look back at the past but a still-bleeding wound for many. She incorporated raw footage from survivors, Israeli police, and even Hamas terrorists to present a truthful and unvarnished depiction of what happened that day. Among those featured in the exhibit is Doron Mizrahi, who was driving near the scene when he stopped to pull bodies from a bomb shelter, desperate to save as many lives as he could. He described finding 10 to 20 people, wounded or dead, in the chaos that unfolded. For survivors like Mizrahi, reliving that day through the exhibit is painful but necessary. "This place is the most honest and painful truth we have known," he said. The exhibit closes on a note of hope, with Feingold expressing a vow to dance again in memory of those lost. She says the exhibit is ultimately about healing and the promise that music and celebration will return. The Nova Music Festival exhibit is open to the public from Tuesday through the end of November at 1800 N. Clybourn Avenue on Chicago's North Side. It serves as a somber reminder of the human cost of terror and offers a space for reflection, understanding, and healing for survivors, families, and visitors alike. This exhibit stands out in its approach by merging physical artifacts with multimedia elements to create a space that both informs and emotionally connects with attendees.
