Communities across northeast Ireland are bracing for a weekend filled with grief as funerals begin for victims of a tragic crash that claimed five young lives last weekend. The devastating accident took place on the Ardee Road near Dundalk around 9pm last Saturday, involving a Volkswagen Golf and a Toyota Landcruiser. The five individuals who died were all in their early twenties, and their sudden loss has left families and friends struggling to accept the enormity of the tragedy. Among those who died were Alan McCluskey, 23, from Drumconrath, Co Meath, and his girlfriend, Chloe McGee, 23, from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan. The other victims included Dylan Commins, 23, from Ardee, Co Louth, Shay Duffy, 21, from Carrickmacross, and Chloe Hipson, 21, a student from Scotland attending Dundalk Institute of Technology. They were on their way to Dundalk for a night out when the crash happened. Thankfully, one man from Ardee, who was also in the Volkswagen, survived the crash with injuries that were not life-threatening and has since been discharged from hospital. Similarly, two people in the Toyota Landcruiser escaped with minor injuries. The local Gardaí are continuing their investigation and have appealed for anyone who was on the L3168 road or the Gibstown area between 8:30pm and 9:15pm on that Saturday to come forward with any information or footage that could help with the inquiry. Funeral arrangements began on Friday with Alan McCluskey's service at St Peter and Paul's Church in Drumconrath at 10am. Dozens of tractors lined the village’s main street as hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their respects. President Catherine Connolly also arrived to offer her condolences. Later that afternoon, Dylan Commins’ funeral Mass was held at 2pm in the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady in Ardee. More services are scheduled for Saturday, with Chloe McGee’s funeral at St Joseph’s Church in Carrickmacross at 11am, and Shay Duffy’s at 1pm in St Patrick’s Church, Rockchapel, Upper Maghercloone. The funeral for Chloe Hipson will take place later in her hometown of Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, allowing her Scottish community to mourn their loss. Over recent days, vigils have been held across Louth, Meath, and Monaghan, drawing hundreds and uniting communities in shared sorrow and support. As the region grapples with this immense loss, the Gardaí have urged anyone with relevant information related to the crash to contact their local authorities to aid the ongoing investigation.
