Hollywood has quite a few stories where studio interference ended up hurting a movie, whether that’s forcing certain casting choices or throwing in unnecessary effects. In the case of Joe Dante’s 1987 film Innerspace, the biggest problem wasn’t meddling or bad effects, but just plain terrible marketing. Unlike The Fantastic Voyage, where the tiny crew is unconscious, Innerspace lets the characters actively interact inside the body, giving Quaid and Short tons of comedic chemistry. Originally, the script was more straightforward sci-fi, but when Steven Spielberg got involved through his Amblin Entertainment, he pushed the team to turn the script into a live-action cartoon. The studio loved this new approach, and the film eventually became a cult classic. Sadly, when it first hit theaters, it didn’t do well. Joe Dante has openly criticized the movie’s poster, which just shows giant fingers holding tiny Tuck and his ship, failing to capture the film’s zaniness or humor. Even the title, Innerspace, came from a working title they kept without much thought, and it didn’t help people get what kind of movie this was. In theaters, Innerspace made about $52 million on a $26 million budget, which seems alright but wasn’t enough to be considered a hit. However, when it came out on VHS, the film blew up thanks to word of mouth, pulling in roughly $50 million from rentals alone. This post-theatrical success is why it’s now known as a cult classic. The movie’s mix of physical humor, silly gags, and practical effects gives it a charm that doesn’t really exist in today’s Hollywood.
