Illinois man charged with threatening President Trump in Instagram video

A 57-year-old man from northern Illinois, Trent Schneider, was arrested on federal charges for making threats against President Trump in an Instagram video. The arrest took place on Monday at his home in Winthrop Harbor, where a Lake County Sheriff's SWAT team detained him and handed him over to federal authorities. According to a criminal complaint unsealed that day, Schneider is charged with one count of making a true threat to injure another person in interstate commerce. The alarming video, posted on October 16, showed Schneider stating he intended to get guns and "take care of business" himself, expressing frustration and anger towards Trump and others, saying people "need to die" and the president "should be executed." The video came with a caption emphasizing his anger and loss, referencing an upcoming house auction and calling Trump a fraud and coward. Authorities say Schneider posted this same video 18 times between October 16 and October 21. He has a history of posting violent threats on social media, including multiple messages aimed at public officials during 2022. Additionally, he posted a cartoon image of Trump with the phrase "should be executed" about 20 times between late September and late October. Federal agents visited Schneider’s home on October 22 to question him about the threats. When confronted, he reportedly became irate and yelled at the officers to leave his property. Shortly after the agents left, Schneider uploaded another video showing them walking down his driveway, coupled with a renewed threat against the president. The Secret Service coordinated with the Lake County Sheriff's Office to execute a search warrant and arrest warrant at Schneider’s residence, with the SWAT team assisting in a smooth arrest. During his initial court appearance, Schneider made a bizarre comment asking if he could stay in the "Trump motel" with popcorn until his detention hearing, scheduled for Thursday. He also mentioned that one of his posts had been removed and later reposted, and repeatedly brought up his mental health. Federal court officials noted Schneider has a lengthy criminal record, including a December 2022 arrest for threatening to "shoot up" a T-Mobile store. At that time, he was found unfit to stand trial. Currently, Schneider remains in federal custody pending his next court hearing. The case highlights ongoing concerns about violent rhetoric and threats made on social media platforms and the challenges law enforcement faces in addressing such behavior. Schneider’s repeated and explicit threats, combined with his history, have led to serious federal charges and a close watch by authorities.
