Jamaica rushes to prepare for peak tourism season as it digs out from Hurricane Melissa

Jamaica is in a mad rush to get back on its feet as the peak tourism season looms just a month away, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. The Category 5 hurricane, which ripped through the island's western region on October 28, left significant destruction in its wake. Prior to the storm, the government was optimistic about a 7% growth in tourism this winter season and had prepared to welcome around 4.3 million visitors. However, now officials are scrambling to repair damaged hotels and clear debris, especially in the western half of the island, to try to attract tourists and secure much-needed revenue. Christopher Jarrett, head of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, mentioned that most of the hurricane damage was concentrated in the northwest and southwest areas. Fortunately, the popular Negril area in Westmoreland escaped major damage. All of Jamaica's international airports have reopened and are accepting commercial flights, but nearly a week after the storm, officials still don’t have a full picture of the damage within the tourism sector, which is vital to the country's economy. Jarrett noted communication and power outages in some areas like Hanover parish have made it tough to connect with many hotel operators. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett expressed hope that the sector will be back to normal by December 15, marking the start of the island's busiest tourism season. Jarrett added that while bigger hotel chains might recover quickly, smaller properties could struggle to meet that timeline. For example, his own family-run Altamont Court Hotel, which has locations in Kingston and Montego Bay, only suffered minor roof damage in Montego Bay, with repairs already underway. Despite the setbacks, Jarrett doesn’t expect the economic impact to be severe, pointing out that hotels in Kingston and Ocho Rios are seeing increased bookings from aid workers and volunteers helping with recovery efforts. To attract customers, hotels are currently offering discounts between 25% and 50%, with some even providing complimentary stays. Tourism is critical to Jamaica, accounting for roughly 30% of the country's GDP both directly and indirectly. It supports about 175,000 jobs and influences other sectors like construction, finance, utilities, and agriculture. But the hurricane's disruption has hit many workers hard. Patricia Mighten, a hotel housekeeper from Hanover, explained that with many hotels closed and tourists absent, numerous people are left without work and income. Similarly, Desrine Smith, a craft vendor in the resort town of Falmouth, shared how the lack of tourists has dried up her daily earnings and made the future uncertain. Sadly, the human toll continues to rise, with the government reporting 32 deaths so far and expecting more. Rescue teams are still trying to reach 25 isolated communities in western Jamaica, using helicopters to drop food supplies. Almost half the island's power customers remain without electricity, prolonging the struggle to recover. As officials race against time to rehabilitate the tourism infrastructure and restore essential services, the resilience of the Jamaican people and their economy is being put to the ultimate test.
