Judge orders man accused of starting deadly LA wildfire jailed while awaiting trial

A federal judge has ruled that Jonathan Rinderknecht, the man accused of starting a deadly wildfire in Los Angeles, must remain in jail while he awaits trial. The fire, which began as a small blaze on New Year’s Day, later reignited and spread rapidly through upscale neighborhoods including Pacific Palisades and Malibu. This inferno was part of two major wildfires that erupted on January 7th, causing tragic loss of life and massive destruction. The fires collectively claimed more than 30 lives and destroyed over 17,000 homes and buildings across Los Angeles County. Rinderknecht, 29, was arrested in Florida in early October while staying at his sister's house in Orlando. During a hearing, a U.S. Magistrate Judge Rozella A. Oliver denied bond, citing concerns about Rinderknecht’s mental health and the distress his actions have caused his family, especially his sister and her household. Despite his father’s testimony denying any mental health issues, prosecutors highlighted Rinderknecht’s behavior traits consistent with an arsonist and expressed worries over his mental stability. They also argued that he poses a flight risk due to family connections in France and his ability to speak French. Following his arrest, Rinderknecht was transferred to Los Angeles and pleaded not guilty to charges including malicious destruction by fire, arson affecting interstate commerce, and setting timber on fire. If found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison. His trial is scheduled for April 21, 2026. Authorities describe the Palisades fire as a "holdover fire," meaning it originated from the initial January 1 fire that Rinderknecht allegedly started but was never fully extinguished. These underground fires can smolder for days or weeks, often undetectable because they burn deep within root systems or forest debris. Los Angeles’ interim fire chief explained that such fires can reach depths of 15 to 20 feet, making it difficult for thermal imaging cameras to locate them. Rinderknecht’s defense attorney, Steve Haney, argued that even if his client did ignite the small fire on New Year’s Day, numerous "intervening factors" contributed to the Palisades fire reigniting a week later. Haney pointed to the response of the Los Angeles Fire Department as a significant factor in how the fire developed, suggesting that other elements beyond Rinderknecht’s initial actions played a role in the devastating spread of the blaze.
