A leaked video from 2024 has sparked a huge controversy in Israel, showing Israeli soldiers allegedly sexually assaulting a Palestinian prisoner at a detention site near the Gaza border. The footage, reportedly filmed at the Sde Teiman base, depicts soldiers blindfolding a detainee and surrounding him with riot shields while the abuse supposedly takes place. This video was leaked to Israel’s Channel 12 and first aired in August 2024, causing widespread outrage across the country and beyond.
The detainee featured in the footage suffered serious injuries, including a ruptured bowel, severe anal and lung damage, and broken ribs. Initially, five reservists were investigated on charges of rape, but these charges were later downgraded to "severe abuse" according to a February indictment. All the accused reservists have denied the allegations and their trial is still ongoing. The scandal reignited recently when Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, the Israel Defense Force’s top military lawyer, admitted to approving the public release of the video and resigned from her position shortly after.
At a cabinet meeting held on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the leak, calling it the "most serious public relations attack Israel has experienced since its founding." He emphasized the massive reputational damage caused not only to Israel as a country but also to the IDF and its soldiers. Netanyahu called for an independent and impartial inquiry to investigate the incident further. The video’s release followed the arrests of the reservists, which had already sparked right-wing riots demanding their release.
In her resignation letter, Tomer-Yerushalmi stated that she decided to leak the video amid mounting pressure to halt the investigation, asserting that her duty was to act on a "reasonable suspicion of violence against a detainee." Meanwhile, several right-wing politicians, including Defense Minister Israel Katz, have condemned the footage’s release, calling it a "blood libel" against soldiers they insist were falsely accused despite the indictments. A criminal investigation into the leak itself was opened last week.
The incident has also drawn criticism from a UN commission investigating Israel's treatment of Palestinians. The commission claimed the leaked video was only "the tip of the iceberg," noting that detainees at Sde Teiman and other detention centers were routinely shackled, beaten, and subjected to sexual abuse. Earlier this year, these and other findings led the UN to accuse Israel of genocide against Palestinians, intensifying international scrutiny over Israel's human rights record.
This scandal has deepened divisions within Israeli society and strained Israel’s international image. The combination of leaked evidence, legal proceedings, political fallout, and external criticism creates a complex and volatile situation. It remains to be seen how the ongoing trial, official inquiries, and political responses will unfold, but the repercussions are certain to resonate both domestically and globally.
