RCMP in B. C. help dismantle massive cybercrime network in global operation - Lake Country Calendar

The federal RCMP's Vancouver-based cybercrime unit recently played a crucial role in dismantling over 1,000 malicious servers as part of a large-scale international operation aimed at combating cybercrime. This effort was a component of Operation Endgame, a global initiative involving more than a dozen law enforcement and judicial agencies from Europe, North America, and Australia. Since its launch in 2022, Operation Endgame has grown to be one of the most significant collaborative actions targeting cybercriminal networks worldwide. Europol led the operation from its headquarters in the Netherlands, coordinating the exchange of intelligence between the participating authorities. This joint effort focused on disabling the tools and systems that cybercriminals rely on, including major infostealers, Remote Access Trojans (RATs), and botnets. These types of malware are notorious for compromising personal data such as login credentials and banking information, while RATs allow hackers to remotely control infected devices. According to cybersecurity firm Cloudflare, devices part of a botnet may be exploited without the owner's knowledge to send spam or launch large-scale attacks. The Mounties emphasized that fighting cybercrime goes beyond just catching criminals; it requires neutralizing the infrastructure that enables their activities. RCMP Superintendent Adam MacIntosh highlighted the importance of international cooperation, stating, "Cybercrime knows no borders, and neither does our response." The success of Operation Endgame demonstrates that even sophisticated, well-organized cybercriminal networks can be brought down when multiple law enforcement agencies unite under a shared objective. Over 100 officers from participating countries coordinated the operation at Europol’s headquarters, but the collaboration extended beyond government bodies. More than 30 public and private sector partners, including cybersecurity companies, contributed significantly to the effort. The operation also involved searches at 11 locations across Germany, Greece, and the Netherlands, resulting in the seizure of 20 domain names linked to malicious activity and the arrest of a suspect believed to be behind the VenomRAT malware. RCMP Inspector Shaun Foley noted that the rapid evolution of cybercrime requires law enforcement to adapt their methods continuously.
