The late Selena Quintanilla's cause of death was officially revealed 30 years after the tragic event that shocked fans worldwide. The Nueces County, Texas Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that the beloved 23-year-old singer died as a result of homicide. Coroner Lloyd White detailed in the autopsy report that Selena succumbed to massive bleeding caused by a gunshot wound to her chest. Despite public demands for transparency, the autopsy was conducted just three hours after her death in 1995, confirming the severity and immediacy of her injuries.
Selena, often remembered as the “Queen of Tejano music,” was fatally shot by Yolanda Saldívar, who initially started as a fan and later became involved in Selena's business affairs. Yolanda had convinced Selena’s family to let her manage the pop star's fan club and eventually took on responsibilities at the family boutique in Corpus Christi. However, suspicions arose when the family discovered that thousands of dollars were missing from both the fan club and the boutique, leading to Yolanda’s dismissal in early 1995.
In the weeks following her firing, Yolanda displayed erratic behavior, including purchasing and returning a Taurus Model 85 revolver multiple times. On March 30, 1995, she checked into a motel in Corpus Christi and called Selena, alleging she had been raped and demanding business documents. Selena, accompanied by her husband Chris Pérez, went to the motel but left without the documents. The next day she returned alone to the motel after taking Yolanda to get checked out at a clinic, but was met with refusal once again.
Tragically, it was during this second visit that Yolanda pulled out the revolver and shot Selena. Despite being seriously wounded, Selena managed to get to the motel lobby to seek help. Paramedics rushed her to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital, but she died at around 1:05 p.m. that day. Meanwhile, Yolanda barricaded herself in her truck for hours, threatening self-harm before surrendering to the FBI after a 10-hour standoff.
Yolanda Saldívar was charged with first-degree murder but pleaded not guilty, insisting the shooting was accidental. The jury did not accept her defense, and she was convicted in October 1995, receiving a life sentence. Now 64 years old, Yolanda remains incarcerated in a women’s prison in Gatesville, Texas.
The renewed focus on Selena’s death has been sparked by the recent release of a Netflix documentary titled "Selena y Los Dinos: A Family's Legacy," which features never-before-seen footage and interviews with her family. This has reignited interest and reflection on the life and legacy of Selena, whose career was cut devastatingly short but continues to inspire millions around the globe.
Selena’s story is one of immense talent and tragic loss, underscored by betrayal and heartbreak. The details revealed in the autopsy and the background of the events leading up to her death provide a deeper understanding of the circumstances surrounding this sorrowful chapter in music history. Fans and followers continue to remember her as a symbol of strength and passion in the face of adversity.
