The Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) at the University of Galway is currently inviting applications for a full-time, fixed-term position as a Software Platform Engineer. This role is available immediately and extends through to December 31, 2027, with flexible working locations offered at their Dublin or Galway offices. ICHEC serves as Ireland’s national hub for High-Performance Computing (HPC), delivering advanced digital infrastructure and expertise in computational sciences, AI, quantum computing, and cybersecurity across multiple sectors. Their strategic focus encompasses HPC, data platforms, AI, and quantum technologies, collaborating closely with academic, industrial, and public sector partners throughout Ireland and Europe. The Software Platform Engineer will be integral to developing, maintaining, and supporting the AI-related software infrastructure for the AI Factory Antenna in Ireland (AIF IRL-Antenna). This infrastructure aims to enable AI development on sovereign and federated platforms, ensuring robust, user-friendly, and reproducible environments for a wide range of AI users from startups and SMEs to large enterprises and public research organizations. The role demands strong software and infrastructure expertise, coupled with a solid understanding of AI workflows and continuous integration/deployment (CI/CD) automation processes. Key responsibilities include designing, deploying, and maintaining AI development platforms and environments across the Irish sovereign infrastructure, linked EuroHPC AI Factory infrastructures in France and Luxembourg, and EU-based commercial cloud resources. The engineer will implement resource management solutions, workflow orchestration, and automation pipelines utilizing tools such as Kubernetes, Docker, and MLOps frameworks. Building reusable software infrastructure for AI resource management and workflow automation, as well as integrating performance monitoring and reliability tools, are crucial aspects of the role. The successful candidate will also support software reusability and automation through containerization and DevOps best practices, collaborate closely with Customer Success Managers and technical teams to onboard and troubleshoot customer projects, and prepare comprehensive user documentation and operational guides. This position seeks a proactive problem-solver with creativity and analytical skills, eager to build impactful solutions on a global scale. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field with at least four years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. Proficiency is required in containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes), cloud or hybrid computing environments, workflow tools such as GitLab CI and Airflow, monitoring and configuration management, AI/ML frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, and programming in Python and Bash scripting. Additional desirable skills include knowledge of Identity & Access Management systems, Linux systems administration and automation tools, distributed computing platforms, and familiarity with GDPR-compliant data governance frameworks. The salary for this position aligns with the Research Associate/Postdoctoral Researcher pay scale at University of Galway, ranging from €46,305 to €59,063 annually, subject to funding limitations and pro rata adjustments for shorter contracts. The default starting salary is at the first point on the scale, with potential for higher placement based on prior experience.
