Suspect faces 10 charges, including murder, in shooting death of San Bernardino County deputy

Prosecutors have filed a total of 10 charges against Angelo Jose Saldivar, a 47-year-old man accused of fatally shooting San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Nunez during a response to a domestic violence call in Rancho Cucamonga. The incident occurred last week when Deputy Nunez was dispatched to a dispute involving Saldivar and his ex-wife outside a condominium complex. According to authorities, Saldivar opened fire on the deputy, killing him in the line of duty. San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson announced the charges during a press conference held outside the Rancho Cucamonga Police Station, where fellow deputies gathered to pay tribute to their fallen colleague. Saldivar faces a murder charge with two special circumstances, one of which includes the killing of a peace officer while performing his duties. Additionally, he is charged with attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment by force, a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, and four counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Some of the victims involved were neighbors or bystanders who called 911 for assistance and were injured during the chaotic events. The situation escalated when Saldivar fled the scene on a motorcycle, prompting law enforcement to pursue him in a high-speed chase along the 210 Freeway. The pursuit ended after an off-duty narcotics deputy forced a crash that stopped Saldivar’s escape. Following the crash, Saldivar was taken to a hospital and remains under medical care. San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus shared that funeral arrangements for Deputy Nunez, a six-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, are currently being organized. Nunez is survived by his wife, their two-year-old daughter, and his wife is expecting their second child. The department and community have expressed deep sorrow over the loss, with many honoring Nunez’s sacrifice at a recent candlelight vigil.
