A grizzly bear attack in Bella Coola has left three school children and one adult injured, according to the BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS). The incident occurred around 1:35 p.m. on Thursday, November 20, near an area known as the Old Trail, close to 4 Mile. The victims were part of a school group that had stopped along a trail by the river when the grizzly bear suddenly emerged from the forest and attacked them. Despite the frightening situation, several teachers acted quickly, using pepper spray and a "bear banger" to fend off the bear. All four injured individuals were initially treated at Bella Coola Hospital before being transported to Vancouver for further medical care. Meanwhile, conservation officers, along with the Bella Coola RCMP, responded promptly to the scene. They worked through the night and into the early morning hours searching for the bear but so far have been unable to locate it. More officers have now been called in to assist with the ongoing investigation, including collecting and analyzing evidence around the attack site. Preliminary information from BCCOS Inspector Kevin Van Damme suggests the attacking grizzly may have been previously injured, which could have influenced its aggressive behavior. The incident has understandably caused distress within the community. The BCCOS is maintaining close contact with the Nuxalk Nation, working together to ensure community awareness and safety. Chief Samuel Schooner of the Nuxalk Nation expressed concern over the unprecedented nature of the attack, emphasizing the trauma it has brought to the community. He also praised the teachers and students for their heroic response, which likely prevented a far worse outcome. In response to the attack, BCCOS has advised residents to avoid the forested area and the river near 4 Mile and recommended that people remain indoors until further notice.
