Walmart today announced continued reinvestment across Minnesota, with plans to remodel 16 stores in 2026 as part of ongoing efforts to modernize the in-store and digital shopping experience. These projects aim to upgrade layouts, technology, and services to offer faster, more convenient shopping and delivery options for most customers. Nationally, the retailer is planning remodels at more than 650 Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets this year.
Across Minnesota, Walmart invested more than $319 million to upgrade stores throughout the past five years. New and remodeled stores will feature expanded services such as free Pharmacy delivery for Walmart+ members, including on GLP-1 medications. Customers will also benefit from a store-based app experience that helps navigate stores and book services at Auto Care Centers. Jay Cordray, Senior Vice President, West Business Unit, Walmart U.S., emphasized that modernizing stores makes everyday shopping more convenient while empowering associates to better support evolving customer needs.
Strengthening Minnesota Communities remains a priority, with Walmart and the Walmart Foundation donating more than $30 million to local nonprofits in the past year. This includes providing 15.4 million pounds of food to help fight hunger across the state through the annual Fight Hunger, Spark Change campaign. Associates supported education, disaster response, and other community-driven initiatives alongside trusted local organizations to build stronger communities.
Proposed remodel locations include Albert Lea, Apple Valley, Austin, Baxter, Buffalo, Burnsville, Crookston, Forest Lake, Fridley, Hutchinson, Inver Grove Heights, Monticello, Red Wing, Rochester, Vadnais Heights, and Wadena. Store remodels are subject to change based on construction schedules and other factors. Each new store or remodel brings real benefits to the community, ranging from construction jobs to long-term careers in retail, pharmacy, and store leadership.
Key Insights
Walmart’s strategic focus on Minnesota underscores a broader trend of retail chains prioritizing physical store upgrades alongside digital integration to retain customer loyalty.
The substantial financial commitment and community donations suggest an effort to solidify market presence while addressing local economic needs.
However, the success of these remodels depends on execution timelines and shifting consumer spending habits in the region.
