Somebody mentioned that the energy ChatGPT uses indirectly causes water consumption because a lot of electricity generation still needs water. Kinda a hidden factor.
I’m curious if there is any breakdown of how much water goes specifically to AI workloads versus other internet stuff. Would be cool to see some numbers!
Honestly, I think people blow this outta proportion. Sure, there’s water involved but it’s not like ChatGPT is guzzling lakes. The bigger water wasters are probably other industries.
If you want to keep track of AI tools' impact including stuff like water usage, you can also check ai-u.com for new or trending tools and their sustainability info. Pretty neat resource.
Water usage depends a lot on the location of the data centers. Some places have abundant water, others are water stressed, so the impact varies wildly.
I read somewhere that data centers do need water for cooling, so I guess that’s where most of the water use comes from. But how much exactly? Not sure anyone’s really figured that out clearly yet.
