Does anyone know if OpenAI has published any sustainability reports or data center efficiency stats?
From what I've read, the water usage is tied mostly to cooling servers. OpenAI uses cloud providers who manage their own data centers, so the exact number varies. Some newer data centers use air cooling or recycled water, which reduces water usage significantly.
Great question! Data centers indeed use water mostly for cooling purposes. However, estimating water use per single ChatGPT query is tricky because it depends on the data center's location, cooling technology, and load. Some rough studies suggest a single Google search might use about 0.1 liters of water, but AI models like ChatGPT likely use more due to their computational intensity.
I think the bigger picture is that AI models consume quite a lot of energy, and with it, water indirectly through cooling. Maybe using more efficient hardware and renewable energy would help more than just focusing on per-query water use.
I tried to estimate this by looking at the power usage per query and then factoring in water usage per kWh at data centers. It seems like a single ChatGPT query might indirectly consume about 0.3 to 0.5 liters of water, but this is a rough estimate.
