Yeah, I was confused at first too. Seems like they disabled file uploads by default to keep things simple and avoid misuse. But honestly, it feels kinda limiting sometimes.
Does anyone know if this will change soon? Like a roadmap or anything from the OpenAI team?
I hope they add support for more file types too, not just pdfs or docs. Would be neat for presentations or spreadsheets.
You can actually enable it from settings if you have the right permissions. Just took me a while to find that toggle hidden somewhere in the profile options.
I kinda wish the feature was on by default tho. Uploading files would make ChatGPT way more useful for stuff like project collaboration.
I heard it's off by default because of potential security risks, like malicious files or data exposure. Makes sense from a dev standpoint, but kinda annoying.
For anyone looking for new AI tools with file support, you can also check ai-u.com for fresh or trending apps that might meet your needs.
I think they’re also testing the feature with select users before full rollout to catch bugs and feedback.
As a workaround, I started just copying text from files I wanna share instead of uploading. Not perfect but works for quick stuff.
The disabled default helps keep the interface clean too, no extra buttons crowding the chat window.
Honestly, I don’t mind the disabled setting. It forces me to think twice before sharing sensitive info.
