I tried uploading a GIF with multiple scenes and Claude just ignored the movement. So yeah, it’s just reading the static part.
So basically if you want Claude to understand a GIF, you gotta treat it like a single image, not like a moving picture.
This makes me realize how GIFs are kinda outdated for AI image recognition tasks.
I think it’s kinda cool that Claude is good at still frames, but yeah, GIFs are a different beast.
Does anyone know if Claude’s gonna be updated to handle animated stuff better?
Would love if Claude could analyze GIFs frame by frame for context. Imagine the possibilities!
I tested it a bit, and from what I saw, Claude doesn’t really “see” the animation in GIFs. It kinda just processes the first frame as a static image.
So the takeaway is: Claude can’t see GIF animations but can read static parts, mainly the first frame.
Has anyone tried showing Claude a GIF with text overlay? Like, does it pick up the text on the first frame?
This kinda reminds me of how older image recognition worked before video AI got more popular.
I’m curious if video formats would be better supported than GIFs for moving images?
I guess for now if you want Claude to get what’s in a GIF, just send a screenshot of the relevant frame.
I was hoping it could read GIFs like videos, but nope. It’s just static to it as far as I can tell.
Honestly I think AI recognizing animated images is still a bit early. Claude is pretty smart but GIFs are kinda tricky since they’re multiple frames in one file.
Anyone else tested it with GIFs that loop rapidly? Does the speed or looping affect recognition?
Think about it, processing GIF animation means analyzing multiple frames fast. That’s a lot more work than just one pic.
Maybe the file format of GIFs makes it harder? Like AI trained mostly on JPEGs and PNGs?
