For hobby projects, the free API quota is a lifesaver, but for anything commercial, you’ll wanna budget for paid tiers.
From what I've seen, OpenAI usually has a free tier for their API but it's limited in usage. I think GPT-3.5 is generally the free option for APIs, while GPT-4 usually costs money.
I think the free API access is mostly for developers to test before they buy. It’s not really meant for production use unless you keep it super small scale.
I had a friend who used the free API for a school project and it was perfect, no need to pay at all for what they did.
Just chiming in, I think the free API access is super limited time-wise and usage-wise. So if you plan to build something big, you'll probs need to upgrade to paid plans.
Just FYI, the free API credits get refreshed sometimes but you gotta keep an eye on the usage. If you go over, bam, charges start.

I read somewhere that OpenAI’s free tier for the API is currently only for GPT-3.5 Turbo, while GPT-4 is always paid. Seems accurate?
