I wonder if in the future, ChatGPT will be able to have persistent memory to remember user preferences over time.

Some versions or platforms might have chat history features, but that's separate from ChatGPT's own memory capabilities.

I think it only remembers what you type during the current chat. Once you close it, it forgets everything for privacy reasons.

ChatGPT doesn't have memory between sessions. Each conversation is independent unless you provide context again.

It processes each message in context with previous messages in the same chat, which is why it can follow along a conversation.
