Why does ChatGPT struggle with writing long essays?

Sometimes I think it’s more about the prompt. If you don’t guide it properly, it might not know how to keep going with the essay.

Yeah, I noticed that too. The answers start strong but then it kinda loses focus or repeats stuff after a while. Maybe it's a built-in thing to keep responses concise?

I've been using it for essays too and find splitting the topic into smaller chunks helps. Like asking for intro, then body, then conclusion separately.

I read somewhere that the model has a max token limit per response, so it can't just generate a super long essay in one go.

I think sometimes it also cuts off because it might hit some safety or content filters? Not sure if that affects length though.
